Royal Engineers

143 AT Coy RE and 287 AT Coy RE

In April 1917 the 801st company were moving stores to the 143rd A.T. Coy R.E. at K62 and at K58 and also supplying the 287th A.T. Coy R.E. at K67.5. Army Troop Companies of the Royal Engineers were established similar to Field Companies, but they operated behind the lines carrying out infrastructure engineering work; bridge building, road construction and repair and water supply work. At this time the Seres Road was only suitable for Motor Transport approximately 15 Kilometres past Lahana, at this point stores had to be unloaded and put on Limbers for Horse Transport on to the Struma valley. By June 1917 the Royal Engineer A.T. Companies had made the necessary improvements to the roads and Motor Transport could be used as far as K72 and beyond.
