Private Ames

There are 29 “M” prefixed medal index cards with the name Ames, no matching service records have been found, so the only information on Private Ames comes from the war diary. Private Ames was a driver with the 801st and is mentioned in the diary just once on the 1st October 1918 when the company was based at Strumica. Three of the companies Lorries had been temporarily attached to the advanced Corps HQ and Driver Ames had probably gone with them, returning to Strumica with the Lorries on the 1st.

Private William Barton

Private William Barton was born in 1886, before the war he worked as a cab driver and lived with his uncle in Bury St Edmunds. He probably enlisted under the Derby scheme in November or December 1915 and in February or March 1916 he married May Middleditch. He was called up in September 1916 around the time that the 801st was formed. In October 1918 there was an Influenza out break in the company and on the 26th November Private Barton was detained at the 84th Field Ambulance. Less than two weeks later Private Barton died from pneumonia at the 28th General Hospital. He is buried at Mikra British Cemetery Kalamaria.

Private Bentley

There are 129 ASC Medal Index Cards for Private Bentleys with an M prefix and none have surviving service records that show they were in the 801st Company. Private Bentley is mentioned twice in the war diary; first on the 23rd November 1918 when he is detained along with Private Kent at the 84th Field Ambulance, and second when it is recorded on the 29th November 1918 that he spent 7 days in Hospital. It does not mention what his illness was, however it is most likely, given the date to have be influenza.
